In Mexico and many other Latin American countries, it is the Three Wise Men who are the bearers of gifts, and leave presents in or near the shoes of small children on the 6th January. It is also known by the name Epiphany and dates back to the 4th Century. A grand feast would be held on this day to honour the occasion of Jesus’ baptism and to pay homage to the Three Wise Men.
The Three Wise Men were among the wisest men of their time, and having discovered that the Messiah was to be born, organised an expedition to find him. They may have travelled as far as 900 miles, following the star that led them to Bethlehem, which may have taken 2 years for them to reach Jesus.
