A Prayer for the Summer Holidays
Dear Lord,
Thank you for the gift of this school year, for the lessons learned, and for the friendships that have grown.
As we step into the freedom of summer, we ask that you bless our children.
Protect them as they play, travel, and explore.
Fill their days with laughter, wonder, and refreshing rest.
Give parents, grandparents, and caregivers the patience and joy to make wonderful memories together.
Guide these weeks so that we return with renewed spirits and a heart full of your love.
In your name, we pray. Amen.
St Swithin’s Day – 15th July
“Apple Christening Day” is a traditional English folklore name for St. Swithin’s Day.
If it rains on that day, St. Swithin is “christening” or blessing the apples.
St Swithin was a ninth century Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester and, according to legend, was tutor to a young King Alfred the Great.
On his deathbed, St Swithin asked to be buried outside Winchester Cathedral, because he wanted his grave to be exposed to both the footsteps of worshippers and the outside elements.
But in the 10th century, some priests who didn’t receive the request decided to move the tomb to a shrine inside the Cathedral.
This move was followed by torrential rain storms, which was taken as a sign of St Swithin’s displeasure.
The Legend goes: If it rains on St Swithin’s Day, it is said to rain for 40 days.
But if it’s dry and sunny on 15 July, then it will be dry and sunny for the next 40 days

There is a new Flower Rota on the wall in the kitchen. If you would like to place some flowers in church to mark a special Sunday, please enter your name on the appropriate date on the calendar.
If you are unable to actually go and buy those flowers and arrange them in church, then this can be done for you. Please speak to an Elder.
