Jesus’ baptism story, found in all four Gospels, describes him going to the Jordan River to be baptized by his cousin, John the Baptist, an act John initially felt unworthy to perform but Jesus insisted was necessary to “fulfil all righteousness”.
As Jesus emerged from the water, the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended like a dove, and a voice from heaven declared:
“This is my Son, whom I love, with Him I am well pleased”.
Affirming Jesus; identity as God’s Son and marking the beginning of his ministry.
A Prayer for Baptism
“Heavenly Father, at the Jordan River you revealed Jesus as your Son; the heavens were opened, the Spirit descended, and the Father proclaimed You as His beloved Son.
Renew in us the grace of our own baptism.
May we recognize Him as our Lord, and know ourselves to be your beloved children, filled with your Spirit, to bring light to the nations and freedom to those in darkness, through Jesus Christ our Saviour”
Amen
