The next stage of demolition of the old church building at Shaw URC started on 9th January 2013.
The Annex (the former Scout Hut) situated at the back of the old church has now been demolished.
The demolition company are hoping to recycle 90% of the materials when they demolish the old church building. In order to do this they will dismantle as much as possible by hand, thus causing minimal disruption to our neighbours and enabling our church community to remain on site using the church hall as normal.
As the old church building is being taken down by hand and it is anticipated that the work will last about 16 weeks.
So sad. I know it seems to be a stark comment but the pictures of the demolition are like witnessing the death of an old friend. I recall in the 1950s many happy and fulfilling times associated with the Church. My drummerboy days in the scouts, the Church and Sunday School anniversaries and my singing with a teenager’s broken voice in the choir on Men’s Sunday. Rememberance Sunday, Christmas, Easter and Whit were all marked by celebration and services while the socials and stage shows provided happy entertainment for all. These may be the ramblings of an old codger about past (and perhaps in some ways better) times but while it may be just bricks, stone, glass and slate disappearing to be recycled it holds joyful, vivid and durable memories for some.
